English term

Triglycerides GPO blanked

English to German Medical Biology (-tech,-chem,micro-)
This term occurs in a text from a producer of laboratory material for the laboratories which determine the above value in blood serum. From the text it becomes clear that they can determine "Triglycerides GPO" (TG) or "Triglycerides GPO blanked" (TG-B).

Discussion

D. I. Verrelli Aug 23, 2019:
Cross-posting By the way, if posting the same enquiry to more than one forum, I think it would be advantageous to explicitly mention that fact on both fora.
Example: https://www.proz.com/kudoz/english/government-politics/66945...

The main reasons are:
(1) during the period when new translations are being proposed, more information will be available as to what references others have found and what translations have already been proposed; and
(2) subsequently, if another translator has a need to translate the same phrase in future, they will have a better chance of finding the optimal suggestion, which might not necessarily have been posted at both fora.
D. I. Verrelli Aug 23, 2019:
Triglyceride GPO Leerwert (TG-B) I noticed the query also at
https://www.translatorscafe.com/tcterms/EN/question.aspx?id=...

I do not think that the (first) response there is exactly right:
"Triglyceride GPO Leerwert (TG-B)"
That might be a good translation of "Triglyceride GPO blank", but not "Triglycerides GPO blanked".

To clarify, here the "ed" suffix is indicating the outcome of an action, namely "'blanking' of the measured concentration", that is "adjusting the measured concentration to correct for 'spurious' components of the response (quantified by analysing a blank)".

So I think here the focus is on reporting a value for triglycerides that is not affected by interference from ...glycerol (see links below). Not an analysis of a blank as the reported value here (which I'd think is normally only of interest within the laboratory, not for patients).

If so, it might have been clearer if the source text had been expressed:
"Triglycerides, by GPO-method (blanked)".

If you want to follow the Beckman–Coulter nomenclature, then it would be "Triglyceride-GPO (Leerwert)".
Perhaps that's a good option for laboratory staff or other experts working in that field. For anyone else I think it would be rather hard to interpret.

By my reading of the Beckman–Coulter method statements, what this is actually intended to mean is the level/concentration of triglycerides, according to the following technique:
(i) Through use of a "triglycerides GPO reagent" that will convert triglycerides to glycerol, determine the apparent content of triglycerides in a synthetic sample [the "blank"] that is known to contain no triglycerides, but instead contains glycerol at an appropriate concentration.
(ii) Through use of a "triglycerides GPO reagent" that will convert triglycerides to glycerol, determine the apparent content of triglycerides in a real (biological) sample that is expected to contain both triglycerides and glycerol.
(iii) Estimate the true content of triglycerides in a real (biological) sample by subtracting the result of analysis (i) from the result of analysis (ii).

I'm not entirely sure, but it seems that the "triglycerides GPO reagent" should contain a few things:
"Triglycerides in the sample are hydrolyzed to glycerol and free fatty acids by the action of lipase. A sequence of three coupled enzymatic steps using glycerol kinase (GK), glycerophosphate oxidase (GPO), and horseradish peroxidase
(HPO)
causes the oxidative coupling [...] to form a red [...] dye."

...So I don't think the reported value is the concentration of GPO present (I think GPO is a component of the "reagent"), nor do I think the blank/control value is being reported (I think the blank value has been applied to obtain the reported value).

Amusingly, I came up with "Leerwertkorrektur" before discovering that it is a term often used by Beckman–Coulter!

I wouldn't be surprised if there are some other more idiomatic options for this portion of the translation.
Borrowing an idea from Barbara Schmidt, "Blindwertkorrektur" is used sometimes
https://www.linguee.com/english-german/search?source=auto&qu...
Still not very often, yet significantly more often than "Leerwertkorrektur".
