This is indeed very tricky. Please see below some more reference I've just found: Defect separation means the distance between neighbouring defects. If this is in a communications stream, for example, it might be measured in packets or bytes. The term is also used in manufacturing of silicon chips and optical and magnetic disks, when it would generally be measured in nanometres.
