In this ST the "slot" is one height unit (1U) in a mounting rack for various IT equipment built in "mount rack" form factor, and is in fact used as an abbreviation for the equipment mounted in the slot - here a network switch from the OmniSwitch 6850 Series.

: here the "slot" is piece of hardware, (the cable between slot 1 and slot 4) in a network, not a logical/software slot in a programme
