Hortonworks: Hortonworks differentiates itself from the other distribution vendors through its 100% commitment to the Apache open-source code. （There are no proprietary projects or layers in Hortonworks' Hadoop distribution known as HDP (or Hortonworks Data Platform), which is backed by a solid support team. ）Key technology partners of Hortonworks include Microsoft, Teradata and SAP, all of which resell HDP as part of their big data portfolio. Through its partnership with Microsoft, Hortonworks is the only vendor with a software distribution available for Windows environments. 首先要理解 proprietary 在软件行业里的含义。
软件项目的发展有两大阵营，开源阵营和商业软件公司阵营，看到 proprietary 一词就往后者上理解是没错的，这词就与开源相对立。
Apache 是开源软件社区重要的核心项目之一，旗下有很多衍生项目。Apache Hadoop 当然就是这些项目中的一个。
优秀的项目往往会吸引很多个人/团体，他们会基于这些项目，开发出很多各具特色的新项目，其中是否使用商业代码，是不一定的。Apache Hadoop 就拥有众多的此类发行版 (distribution)。有些用了商业代码，有些没有。
layer 是指 N-layer 多层架构设计中的某一“层”，可实现为具体的“组件” (component)。Layer 把它理解为实现特定功能的组件即可。组件是代码集合，可以在软件项目里方便地加以使用。商业组件就是成熟的 layer，可以直接销售。
Hortonworks 的 Hadoop 发行版 HDP，未使用任何商业项目或商业分层组件。
也就是说除了来自 Apache Hadoop 的开源代码，所有其他代码都由 Hortonworks 自行开发，如此也便可以理解最后一句：Hortonworks 的 HDP 项目拥有坚不可摧的支持团队。代码都是自己内部人做的，支持当然没瑕疵。
