a way to measure a user's unique identity. This measure uses deduction or inference based on a rule or algorithm which is valid for that server. For example, the combination of IP address and user agent can be used to identify a user in some cases. If a server receives a new request from the same client within 30 minutes, it is inferred that a new request comes from the same user and the time since the last page request was spent viewing the last page. The definition accompanying the question is misleading. Here are three definitions:

1. American Heritage Dictionary:

"Relating to or using a problem-solving technique in which the most appropriate solution of several found by alternative methods is selected at successive stages of a program for use in the next step of the program."

2. Computer Desktop Encyclopedia:

"A method of problem solving using exploration and trial and error methods. Heuristic program design provides a framework for solving the problem in contrast with a fixed set of rules (algorithmic) that cannot vary."

3. Wothless Word of the Day:

"of or relating to exploratory problem-solving methods that utilize self-educating techniques to improve performance ."
