Dutch term

stellen

Dutch to English Law/Patents Law (general)
This is from an email exchange about property damages, what does stellen mean in this context?

Selected

appear as counsel; act as counsel; present oneself as counsel [i.e. for a party in proceedings]

As per my earlier reference comment and, for the third option, see also the following link:

(...)
On that day Shell’s attorney presented himself as counsel in cases a, b, d, and e, but not in case c, because according to Shell no notice of appeal had been received in that case.

argue / proxy

Just reminded of the phrase "argue for the defendant" (in which case we'd normally see "pleiten" in the Dutch in civil/criminal proceedings). "Stellen" can either be wederkerig or not (the latter case of which means "to contend"). In its reflexive form, you might could stretch this to "proxy for", given that we sometimes use "proxy" as a verb. That would imply that the lawyer is there to argue on behalf of (i.e. "proxy for") the company.

agree Barend van Zadelhoff : Can only reply vaguely: this certainly seems to fit into the context / can't confirm nor deny the dictionary entry as a solution.
