Dutch term
al dan niet in ruste
Dutch to English
Other
General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
Journalism/Newspaper article
Occurs in the following sentence: "Er is natuurlijk niets tegen ondernemers, al dan niet in ruste, die hun verantwoordelijkheid nemen. Maar ze zouden een paar lessen ter harte moeten nemen."
"Whether or not retired"/"Whether active or retired" don't seem make the most sense in the broader context of the article, as it is solely about active entrepeneur philanthropists up until the point this phrase is introduced. However, my usual online resources are also failing me re: what reasonable alternative translations might be in this context.
This is from an article in the NRC Handelsblad (first paragraph under "Een paar lessen": https://www.nrc.nl/nieuws/2019/02/01/foute-filantropen-bedre...
Any thoughts?

: Seems obvious enough to me, retired or active businessperson (an why is 'ondernemer' so often translated as entrepreneur? Businessman/Businesswoman or gender-neutral businessperson is what we call them in English, unless they're big risk takers.)

thanks! agree, never use ‘entrepeneur’ unless there's an element of risk taking
