Interesting question. I was tempted to answer "island province", comparing it to "diputaciones" on the mainland, but reading the Wikipedia (!) explanation it seems to have a more special status and this is the term preferred by the local authorities themselves in English. Of course, it will depend to an extent on who your target readers are. You may prefer "Majorca", for example.
