English term

know the Book by name

English Art/Literary Religion 19th century text
What will I say of those who seldom or never read the Bible? There are thousands of persons, I fear, who answer this description. They ***know the Book by name***; they know it is commonly regarded as the only Book which teaches us how to live and how to die: but they can never find time for reading it. Newspapers, reviews, novels, romances, they can read, but not the Bible.

the only thing the people know is the name of the Holy Book

They never looked inside, so the only thing they know is that there is a book called "the Bible", nothing more.

agree Refugio : To know someone by name is to have heard of them but not know them personally.
