Context: Professor Schwartz wrote in In Search of Wealth and Power as discussed : ¡°To the Sages, however, the energetic pursuit of survival and mastery as ends, the prospect of strife and conflict, represented the demonic, the ultimate evil....¡±
Question: I am confused by "survival and mastery" listed together. Can somebody tell me what "mastery" means in simple English. Thank you very, very much in advance!

control / domination

I think mastery here means the control over something, probably people

It could also mean to hold the authority of a master. To be in complete charge over your subjects. Like a master of slaves.

to pursue as goals: survival (and go even further) and

I think it is the sentence itself which is somewhat difficult to understand (I am not familiar with Professor Schwartz's work)

survival is a basic goal/objective (once you have achieved that, you can go on to mastery)
mastery is the final step: control
