Que coman tortas
I am sorry about my previous answer but I found this is the right answer. It's the literal translation of English phrase. See website: ............... ..."O como proponia Maria Antonieta cuando el pueblo decia que no habia pan: "Que
coman tortas"
coman tortas"

Comment: "I'll be using your suggestion. I guess this sentence just doesn't have the cliché value in Spanish that it has in English. Thank you."

A falta de pan, buenas son tortas
Me parece que ésta debe ser la traducción.

que coman pastel!
The other answerers either got their translations from the dictionary or they are involved in other dialects. In Mexican Spanish (where I'm from) the only word for cake (as Marie Antoinette meant it) is pastel. Torta is a cake as in a cake of soap, a type of sandwich, etc.. CAKE cake is pastel. But then again, I'm referring to Mexican Spanish - it may be different in other dialects. Anyway, I grew up in Mexico and this is what I read in school. Hope this helps! SUERTE

Son pan comido
In my country when somebody is to confront an ugly situation. The significance of the phrase is that there is no doubt that is going to be easy to put the problem to rest. In this case, María Antoinette she was the power and the people were the plebeians.
