German term

Wahlpflichtstück

TIA

Sure... sorry: "A 21st century work (elective chosen from set list)." (This was a bullet point in a list of pieces that had to be performed in one of the rounds). The German original was:
"Ein Werk aus dem 21. Jahrhundert nach Vorgabe (Wahlpflichtstck)."
Francis Lee (X) Dec 3, 2004:
Would you mind telling us what you finally chose to write?
Non-ProZ.com Nov 25, 2004:
No,unfortunately it's in parentheses.
Francis Lee (X) Nov 25, 2004:
s.u. - is the word in a sentence?
Non-ProZ.com Nov 25, 2004:
But... ...does that also express the fact that they can choose a piece, albeit from a pre-determined list of pieces?

compulsory elective piece

The term is used in connection with courses rather than pieces played in a competition, but it might apply in your case, too.

The MA Programme in Community Music is a one year, full-time postgraduate programme. It comprises six modules of lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops (each modules is weighted at three credits) and a final presentation worth nine credits. The final presentation will take the form of an extended written submission, a performance, a community project or a combination of the above. The final format will be decided in consultation with the course director. Students will take two modules and one compulsory elective each semester. The elective module is a self directed module with guided expertise drawn from the staff of the Irish World Music Centre.

neutral Francis Lee (X) : I don't think the term is used for competitions; in your link, "elective piece" is a synonym for "a selection of their choice"

The competition began with Manchester's own Jamie Prophet ... His elective piece was the Hummel Concerto, to which he brought a highly thoughtful and very successful musical interpretation. http://www.trumpetguild.org/2002conference/thurs/301.html
