French term

éperons

French to English Medical Medical (general)
Hello,
I'm driving myself mad trying to find the equivalent term for "éperons" in this context.
I have looked at previous entries but the answers given don't seem to quite fit...

Definition from the Académie nationale de médecine:
éperon bronchique l.m.
Crête sagittale fine, cartilagineuse recouverte de muqueuse séparant deux orifices bronchiques contigus au niveau de la division d'une bronche

Can anyone help with the specific English term for éperons here please?
Thanks so much for any assistance!

Thank you to everyone for your contributions. I awarded the points to Liz because she was the first to propose "spurs", so thought that was the fairest way.
Bashiqa Feb 27:
Not certain if this is of any use but does refer to rib spurs. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9649940/
Perhaps spur is the term you are looking for.

hmm, it says "spurs" here, but I would double check for both possibilities

Measurements: The appearance of the bronchial tree was recorded, and biopsies were taken from spurs of the proximal and distal branches of the right bronchi.

can't find any refs for biopsy of the carinae, so maybe it is "osteophytes/spurs". Perhpas you should read up on this a bit more:)

just had another thought

i think there is only one carina so as your word is in the plural, it could well be "spurs"!
Note from asker:
Thanks very much for your help. Yes, I had come across carina but it's the fact that it's in the plural. Maybe "spurs" is ok. I will indeed do a bit more reading up :)

carina

Not a medical person, and I'm not sure that there might not be other éperons than this tracheal one, in the case your text is addressing one in some other part of the lungs.

(P.N.A. carena tracheæ.)
https://www.larousse.fr/encyclopedie/medical/carène/11791

The carina of trachea (also: "tracheal carina"[1]) is a ridge[1] of cartilage[2] at the base of the trachea separating the openings of the left and right main bronchi.[1][2]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carina_of_trachea

carène de la trachée l.f.
carina tracheae (TA)
carina of trachea
Syn. anc. éperon trachéal

Peer comment(s):

disagree Sue Davis : all of your refs refer to the carina at the trachea which is outside the lung. I believe that the text refers to comparable structures located at the subdivision of bronchi within the lung, "bronchial spurs".

carina (carinae)

bronchial spurs

In my experience as a professional anatomist, the term carina is usually applied only to the area under the bifurcation of the trachea into the two main bronchi. see

though there is sometimes reference to a secondary carina.

In this case a) épérons is plural b) the operation clearly takes place within the lung wheren the mass is located.

There is a technique, known as bronchial spur biopsy -https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/bjh.15966
Bronchial spur biopsy was performed in 17 patients, and each revealed a diffuse mucosal infiltration by small B-lymphocytes,

Finally, although our study is limited in that it is retrospective and because of the small sample size, it nevertheless has identified three key diagnostic elements of SBi: bronchial symptoms in the absence of infection, endobronchial nodules revealed in a lung scan, and positive bronchial spur biopsy.

It may be placed slightly toward the posterior or the anterior. It is bordered by the lobar spur, which is large, at a 90 degree angle by the fusion of the outer wall of the bronchus intermedius and the inner side of the upper lobe bronchus.
