痘苗病毒
痘病毒 (poxvirus) 在病毒学、免疫学和疫苗学等方面发挥着十分重要的作用。1798年，英国医生Edward Jenner从牛痘病毒 (cowpox virus) 中制备活疫苗用于预防天花 (smallpox，variola) 并获得成功，奠定了免疫学的基础。1980年，世界卫生组织宣布人类消灭了天花，建议不再进行天花的疫苗接种。而这一年人类利用重组DNA技术成功地将痘苗病毒 (vaccinia virus，VV) 开发成为一个高效表达外源基因的病毒载体，这种载体可以用于疫苗的研制，为与痘病毒无关的疾病预防与控制提供了重要的技术手段。痘病毒是所有病毒中最大的病毒，病毒基因组为线状双链DNA，约130~375kb，含有约185个开放读框 (ORF)。
