: small fly in the ointment "le district" has a rather vague meaning in France.

Directeur régional et directeur départemental
Area and district mean different things to different countries.
My translation is rooted in the French tradition. France is divided into regions, which are to divided into departments.

: Your variant assumes - with no reason at all to do so - that whichever country this company is in has the same types of administrative subdivisions as France.// I don't do guessing, especially not with CL5./ try: "no answer" can be the best answer?

: Depending on the company being "le Directeur régional" can mean covering anything from few towns to a whole continent.

Discussion
It's not even obvious with one would be bigger - is each "district" (as fas as the specific company is concerned) subdivided into several "areas", or is it the other way round, you can't guess a priori. If no specifics are given, the two terms could also, for all we know, be used without any "hierarchy" between them.
You need to take a close look at the specific company.
