retreat / pillar robbing
Retreat mining is the removal of pillars in the underground mining technique known as room and pillar mining. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retreat_mining
--
Retreat mining - A system of robbing pillars in which the robbing line, or line through the faces of the pillars being extracted, retreats from the boundary toward the shaft or mine mouth. - https://www.dep.pa.gov/Business/Land/Mining/BureauofMineSafe...

This practice is known as “pillar robbing,” though to get away from the negative picture that this raises, it may be called “pulling” or “drawing” the pillars. Essentially the miners will start at the boundary and work back towards the shaft, removing coal from the pillars in a systematic pattern as they go. And if you pull out the supports that hold the roof up, then that roof will collapse into the opening beneath it. - http://theoildrum.com/node/6683

Retreat mining is often the final stage of room and pillar mining. Once a deposit has been exhausted using this method, the pillars that were left behind initially are removed, or "pulled", retreating back towards the mine's entrance. After the pillars are removed, the roof (or back) is allowed to collapse behind the mining area. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Room_and_pillar_mining#Retreat...
