I suppose 'making peace' with the tax inspector is the idea, but have never seen the term used like that in UK taxing statutes or otherwise.
Making up a National Insurance Contributions (NIC) shortfall — It's up to you whether you make up any shortfall.
You can usually pay voluntary contributions for the past 6 years. The deadline is 5 April each year. Example. You have until 5 April 2023 to make up for gaps ...
