I really think that again here, we simply wouldn't express it in the same way in EN; we often seem to say "he puts everything else before me" or "I always seem to be last on his list of priorities", "his work comes first", etc. I think if you turn it round that way, it's easier to make it work with the list of things given: he puts his work / this or that before me.
It also works well with the friend's comment: "Who do you put first / before yourself?"
