Spanish term

Grabados en seco

Spanish to English Social Sciences Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting Bookbinding
Hi there, I'm looking for help with "grabados en seco."

Some context:

No podemos olvidarnos tampoco de la experimentación con nuevos tipos de tintas, encuadernaciones y acabados especiales (troquelados, grabados en seco, barnizados, etc.) que alcanzan a otros sentidos del lector, más allá de su vista.

Thank you!

dry etching

Here is some information on this in Spanish, which mentions the term "chemical dry etching." I'd hesitate to use the word "chemical" because there are three different types of dry etchings mentioned: https://www.plasma.com/es/glosario-de-tecnologia-del-plasma/... Here is another site that mentions the term "dry etching": https://www.plasmaetch.com/dry-etching.php. I went to art school and did etchings, but am a little out of touch with the latest techniques, but my guess is that these are artists using industrial techniques for fine art purposes. If you want to be sure, try contacting the Tamarind Institute in Albuquerque, NM, which is a well-respected school for printmaking.

agree neilmac : Which part of "largely synonymous" did you fail to grasp?

Sorry, ProZ limits characters and wanted to include URL! Engravings cut plate with a burin. Traditional etchings cut plate with acid, rocker, or finely-pointed pointed tool--so called "drypoint." Subtle difference. Check out engravers.com. Cheers!

"Etching is an intaglio printmaking process in which lines or areas are incised using acid into a metal plate in order to hold the ink. "
Engraving: "the process or art of engraving a design on a hard surface, especially to make a print."
I don't see a tremendous difference in those two definitions plucked at random from the Internet.
Example sentence:

Their particular shapes and angles make these tools optimal for dry engraving techniques

Tried a dry Engraving and it worked well

Note from asker:
Thanks for this. I couldn't find anything convincing about bookbinding and dry engravings but it looks like you did. Thank you!

disagree Rowena Galavitz : Engravings are prints made from metal plates that have been engraved with burins. See: https://www.metmuseum.org/about-the-met/collection-areas/dra...

Etchings and engravings are synonymous in my opinion, and I think a "neutral" would have been a more worthy response.
