@ Robert It's the context, not the expression, that is formal. In English, it may be OK to use the informal expression "cover your tail" in a formal context, but in Portuguese it's not OK to use "rabo" in this context. A company in Brazil woulnd never use "rabo" in an HR document.

Conotação A ideia é realmente algo negativo. O comportamento de cover your tail é criticado ao longo do texto real/mais amplo, por isso o ficar na defensiva funciona aqui.

Documento formal de RH Trata-se de um documento formal. Não é aconselhável usar "rabo" ou "tirar o seu da reta". Seriam ótimas traduções em um texto literário ou informal, mas não neste caso.

Sei que pode uma expressão bem coloquial, talvez "isentar-se de responsabilidade" seja mais polido, mas acho que tem significado semelhante. Veja os links abaixo.
