school governing body/ funding body
For those wishing to switch
to a lower secondary school
[Hauptschule ], there are schools
available that are run by Stadt
Braunschweig. In addition, they
may opt for schools run by
governing bodies other than
Stadt Braunschweig.

Across all education sectors in Germany, engagement of sub-national actors plays a strong role; this is a key feature of the vocational system- for example, where employers contribute to aspects of governance and funding- and is a developing feature of tertiary education, where institutional governing boards with external representatives are increasingly being established.

Comment: "In line with TonyTK's comment, this is what I was looking for rather than the school board or school authorities (this would be the Schulbehörde/Schulamt, not the Träger. Thank you!"

official school authorities
Thanks this is a really cool one, Idon't think this is referring to mere school boards (Schulvorstand m, Schulbehörde f · Schulaufsichtsrat m · Schulamt nt · Schulausschuss m)
But rather something along the lines of official school authorities or umbrella organisation or official governing bodies over one or more schools, but leaving it open to more possibilities, thus the words official and authorities, etc. and not necessarily governing body, since governing body is usually
Dachverband m · Vorstand m · Verwaltungsrat m · Leitungsgremium nt · Verwaltungsgremium nt · Aufsichtsrat m · Verwaltungsorgan nt · Leitungsorgan nt · Führungsgremium nt · leitendes Organ nt · geschäftsführendes Organ nt · Kontrollorgan nt · Führungsorgan nt
Having said that, I would still consider using governing body as it is more nebulous than board and a rather familiar term.

: Cannot see how "official" adds anything - I would think all authorities are "official"
