English term

Things in action

English to Portuguese Art/Literary Law (general) Property law
“Property” includes money and all other property, real or personal, including things in action and other intangible property.
A chose in action or thing in action is a right to sue. It has been made trite law, since Torkington v Magee, that a chose in action is a legal expression used to describe all personal rights of property which can only be claimed or enforced by action.

Discussion

@John Encontrei isto no site: europa.eu . Espero que seja útil...
Pursuant to section 229(1), a provisional liquidator, once appointed, is obliged to 'take into his custody or under his control all the property and things in action to which the company is or appears to be entitled'.

direitos

I'd translate it to "direitos" because "intangible property" appears at the end...

#chose in action | (civil procedure) direito que pode ser cobrado por meio de ação civil [MerriamWebster’s Dictionary of Law , p. 76]. Pode-se traduzir simplesmente por direito ou bem intangível [Kinsella, N. Stephan. A Civil Law to Common Law Dictionary, p. 25].

English term (edited): thing(s) / chose(s) in action

direitos de ação

like a money debt, copyright, a registered company share or a right to sue that is actionable by suing and needs to be assigned in writing, as opposed to a thing or chose in possession -like a bearer company share - that be transferred by actgaul delivery of physical possession.

Otherwise, Snell's Equity as a standard textbook - preferably obtianable cheaply second-hand - and Curzon's English Law Dictionary contain classic definitions of the difference.

Note that the translations of cause of action POR/SPA -> ENG are IMO only one side of the coin or are flawed.
Example sentence:

IATE: pt direito de ação Consilium en right of action

IATE: fr droit d'action CdT en chose in action

Acredito que caiba nesse contexto, já que adiciona no comentário também "and other intangible property".
