English term
Food Quarterly
English to German
Bus/Financial
Investment / Securities
***Food Quarterly***
The start to the year 2022 was marked by tighter monetary policy, a shameful war in Ukraine and skyrocketing inflation. Those three factors are putting economic growth at risk and even though a recession is not yet on the cards the probabilities have risen.
While the Fed pivot was ignited during the November 2021 FOMC, the speed of monetary policy tightening took a bumper during the last couple of months as the US central bank tries to tackle a rampant inflation alimented by post Covid demand and the war in Ukraine. In our last quarterly letter, the median dot plot indicated three Fed funds rate hikes in 2022 versus seven now. The first turn of the screw took place in March with a 25 basis points increase as the committee “expects inflation to return to its 2 percent objective and the labor market to remain strong”. Market expectations have moved toward more hikes and some strategists target up to nine raises.
The war in Ukraine is partially explaining the stiffness of the FED as the most direct economic impact of the conflict is on food and energy prices. Russia and Ukraine together export between 20 to 50% of the world soft commodities. The Russian Federation is the number three producer of oil and provides about 40% of the EU’s natural gas imports, with Italy and Germany especially dependent. Brent oil stands above the 100$ mark per barrel and European natural gas prices increased by more than 60%. As a result, inflation is skyrocketing with CPI and PPI indices reaching historical high levels. The CPI release of February was 7.9% and the PPI was 13.8%, both at 40 years highs.
