à rouleaux décroisés

French to English Tech/Engineering Mechanics / Mech Engineering
couronnes d'orientation à billes, galets croisés, ou à rouleaux décroisés.

I understand the other types, however I can't find any hits on rouleaux décroisés, could it be the same as "straight rollers"?

Discussion

Kim Metzger Mar 31, 2022:
Your proposal is individual axial-radial rollers (oriented crosswise)
Johannes Gleim Mar 31, 2022:
I said axial-radial rollers.
Kim Metzger Mar 30, 2022:
Herr Gleim suggests "oriented crosswise." To avoid saying "crossed"?
jessjess (asker) Mar 30, 2022:
Thank you Tony, indeed I also asked myself the same question! I will write a note when returning my translation.
Tony M Mar 30, 2022:
Background info I have found slew rings that use "crossed rollers", compared to others that just use "rollers" — so my initial reaction would be that these 'rouleaux décroisés' would simply be the ones that are not crossed — so just plain 'rollers'. However, it will probably take a deal more research to confirm that (or not).

cross/ed rollers

The French is a terminological outlier. "rouleaux décroisés" gets a single ghit, yours.
https://www.schaeffler.fr/fr/products-and-solutions/industri...

Yet again, the 'dé' in the French is a reinforcer, not a negater.

Both cross and crossED roller appear to be said. My own preference would be 'crossed', given the diagram attached where rollers are alternately at 45° and 135° from vertical, so 'crossed' relative to each other.

For Americans:
Slew ring bearings takes axial and radial loads and moment simultaneously and are used in rotating mechanisms such as excavators and cranes for earthmoving equipment. For these applications, a CROSS ROLLER bearings can be used and feature more stiffness than the ball type bearings. In this paper the static and dynamic equivalent loads are calculated for the CROSS ROLLER type slew ring bearings such as cylindrical roller and tapered roller bearings. As a result, simple formulae were obtained to calculate the safety factors and bearing lives for the CROSS ROLLER slew ring bearings under simultaneous eccentric axial load and radial load.

Just to complicate matters, while the rollers that are 'rouleux croisés' are equally referred to as 'galets', 'galets' can also be a different animal entirely. While still a 'roller' in English, they are in fact 'wheels' on their own bearing race. They are used mostly for linear systems, rarely, I think, for slewing rings of any sort, and probably never for heavy-duty applications.

Complicating matters even further, there is your crossed roller configuration, with a single row of rollers where alternate rollers are rotated 90° to each other, and, achieving the same result, your double-row (opposing) roller configuration, with two rows of rollers, where the rollers in one row are all at the same angle, and the rollers in the other row are at right angles to the former.

Then there are triple-row roller bearings and roller bearings with bayonet joints, both of which have at least one set of vertical rollers and at least one set of horizontal rollers.

https://www.liebherr.com/en/aus/products/components/large-di...

It is possible that this 'à rouleaux DÉcroisés' system, which appears nowhere on the Internet, might be one of either the double-row (opposing) roller type, the triple-row roller type, or the type with bayonet joints. But which one?

I really think the customer should be approached!

Effectivement. Pourtant je suis sûr de l'avoir vu (résultat Google avec le lien de cette page Kudoz). Donc je corrige: 'rouleaux décroisés' ne semble pas exister.
agree Tony M : The only trouble is, in the reference I found, the text opposed 'crossed rollers' and (just plain old ordinary) 'rollers'; however, I think the 'crossed' ones were in fact the 'galets croisés', which would then make more sense.

Crossed-roller bearings are bearings for high-precision applications whose dimensions conform to ISO dimension series 18 as per DIN 616. They comprise outer rings, inner rings, rolling elements and plastic spacers. The outer ring is split and is held together by three retaining rings.
Due to the X arrangement of the cylindrical rollers, these bearings can support axial forces from both directions as well as radial forces, tilting moment loads and any combination of loads by means of a single bearing position.

Similar to slewing rollers (one race):

INA slewing rings are known worldwide as premium products in the field of rolling bearing technology. These machine elements have proven themselves many times over; they have high load¬carrying capacity, a versatile range of applications and are highly cost-effective. Due to their design, a single bearing can reliably support radial, axial and tilting moment loads.

(inclined rollers again, cf. sectional view)

Crossed Roller Bearings – Overview (double races)
The performance of crossed roller bearings is outstanding compared to other slewing rings. Due to the crossed-roller arrangement of the cylindrical rollers they offer advantages such as:
https://www.ibo-tec.de/en/products/crossed-roller-bearings.h...
(cf. sectional view)

All types above contrast with axial-radial and individual radial or axial roller bearings.

Rotary table bearings
Axial-radial bearings are double-direction axial bearings for screw mounting with a radial guidance bearing. These ready-to-fit, pregreased units are very rigid, have high load-carrying capacity and operate with particularly high accuracy. They can support radial forces, axial forces from both directions and tilting moments free from clearance.
https://www.schaeffler.de/en/products-and-solutions/industri...
(2 perpendicular races, cf. sectional view)

Cylindrical Roller Bearings
Cylindrical roller bearings are widely used in machine manufacture. Through the – modified – line contact, cylindrical roller bearings can withstand a higher load than most other roller bearings of the same diameter.
https://www.ibo-tec.de/en/products/ball-and-roller-bearings/...
(individual rollers, cf. sectional view)

Axial Cylindrical Roller Bearings
Single direction high precision axial cylindrical roller bearings are fitted particularly into tooling machines for turntable bearings.
https://www.ibo-tec.de/en/products/ball-and-roller-bearings/...
(cf. sectional view)

Axial-radial cylindrical roller bearings of the ARL-E®) series consist of a two-sided working axial cylindrical roller bearing and a radial cylindrical roller bearing.
The axial bearing system consists of:
• two axial roller and cage assemblies
• Housing washer (outer ring)
• L-bracket (inner ring)
• Shaft washer

(cf. sectional view)

Conclusion: « couronnes (à d’orientation à) rouleaux décroisés » are individual roller bearings for axial or radial load and corresponding roller orientation, which may be combined to bear loads from both directions, while « couronnes (à d’orientation à) rouleaux croisés » have roller races not arranged perpendicularly (crosswise) or transvere to each other, but inclined by approx. 45 degree.

with uncrossed rollers

We are talking about the different shapes of the slewing bearings:
balls (billes), crossed rollers (galets croisés), or uncrossed rollers (rouleaux décroisés).
An example of the type of slewing bearing (in French, but just to see the photo):

Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : although I'd agree with your explanation, I really don't believe 'uncrossed' rollers would be used in normal EN. At best, perhaps, one might say 'non-crossed'.
