Notification of death, duty status whereabouts unknown, or missing will be carried out in person to the primary next of kin and secondary next of kin. Notification officers will wear a formal uniform as stipulated by their branch guidelines. For the Marine Corps, it is the Service Alpha uniform; for the Air Force, it is the Service Dress, etc.

§ 72.4 Notifications of death.
The consular officer should make best efforts to notify the next of kin (or legal guardian), if any, and the legal representative (if any, and if different from the next of kin), of the death of a United States citizen or non-citizen national by telephone as soon as possible, and then should follow up with a written notification of death.
