English term
facilities
Not sure what this word means. Amenities? Pieces of equipment? Place (e.g. an assisted living facility)?

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.
How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:
An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)
A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).
Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.
When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.
* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

: I think that's too specific here: it isn't onlly adapting the home environment, but also, for example, providing extra equipment, etc.

Your example sentence from the dictionary is just that, an example showing an unrelated idiom in use and basically gives no real context for THIS term.
Many things need to be taken into account to take care of elderly people. (And I have quite a bit of personal experience with this)
Do they live in a bungalow? Or do they need a stairlift? A bed hoist? An adapted bathroom? A commode? Panic button? Adapted kitchen appliances and counters? Meals on wheels? Home help? Etc.
It all depends on the health/mobility of the elderly person as to which facilities they will need so the word itself is very general. Some examples of what may be needed

Staying in your own home as you age has the advantage of keeping you in a familiar place where you know your neighbors and the community. You can take advantage of home care services and make home repairs or modifications to make your life easier and safer.

so "facilities" in THIS context is not only about devices, equipment and physical infrastructure of the home but could also include other supports provided by visitors such as a community nurse and carers, food deliveries, home cleaners etc. so as to allow an elderly person live in their own home as long as possible and make their lives a bit easier.
Good points, Yvonne. I couldn't access the page, the link is broken. I had a similar experience in that I used to have an online business selling products for special needs. |

Thank you, José Patricia. This seems to contract your comment on post on the Discussion Board. I'm leaning towards an ambivalent interpretation here. I guess it can be the equipment in the home (for homecare patients) or the facilities outside (assisted-living facilities and the like). What do you think? |
Sorry for the typo. I meant "Patrício". Silly fingers! |

: One meaning yes, but not really the term in THIS context, old people who need help are hardly likely to need a sports facility
