No nos conocemos del todo.

Spanish to English Other Idioms / Maxims / Sayings Sayings
Hi
"No nos conocemos del todo," is something I once heard on a TV programme.
Does it mean that we don't know each other at all, or merely that we don't know each other completely (although we may know each other quite well)?

Here's another thought:

'We never know the whole story'
Peer comment(s):

agree O G V : Yes, the whole story from each one of us, or something like that

Thank you! Maybe: 'We don't know the whole story about each other'
agree Jennifer Levey : Yes - the phrase suggests that we (think we) know a lot about the other(s), but are aware that there gaps in our understanding.

disagree Sofía Fernández : Actually no, they are talking about people, not about a story. That, in Spanish, would be something like "no sabemos todo lo que pasó". In this case they were asking about people so it would be "We don´t know each other that well."

"Story" means people. It's a idiom in English.

Spanish term (edited): No nos conocemos del todo

we don't know each other completely

Nos falta mucho para llegar a conocernos del todo

la expresión del todo se usa con la idea de que es total, no una parte

Luego busco ejemplos
Peer comment(s):

agree Wyoming (X) : About what I suggested, but you correctly retain the initial negative construction

we don't really know each other all that well

Either because they haven't had much interaction up till now, even though they have met, or because they are in a relationship, even one that might have turned out to be long-term, in which one of those involved realize that they are not on the same page, after all, when it comes to one or more things.

We're not very close.

While not a literal translation, this communicates the same idea, and its conciseness makes it a good fit for accommodating CPS limits were you to translate this for subtitles.

We know each other but not all the way

We are familiar with each other, but there are gaps of understanding.
Peer comment(s):

agree O G V : sí, sería como decir "nos conocemos, pero no del todo"
