Spanish term

cañoneo acústico

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Environment & Ecology Seismic exploration (Argentina)
Claramente, las condiciones hidrometeorológicas más favorables para la navegación con un nivel de oleaje y vientos de menor intensidad generan una mayor eficiencia en la recepción de los ecos sonoros devueltos por el lecho marino al cañoneo acústico.

philgoddard Jan 28, 2022:
To clarify Althea's first reference is the document that Neil is translating. The text appears on page 2, and I don't believe "cañoneo" is an object.
Althea Draper Jan 28, 2022:
This looks to be about seismic airgun blasting in sectors CAN 108 and CAN 114 off the Argentine coast.

Here's a piece about it here and how the blasting is carried out.

However, seismic airgun blasting uses airguns that send soundwaves through the water which bounce off of the seabed but the sound doesn't return to the airguns but to hydrophones/geophones and this is not what the text says. It says that the sound is returned to the airguns not the hydrophones/geophones which isn't correct.

Not sure how this would translate - maybe just seismic instrument rather than gun as this would be a bit more correct?
philgoddard Jan 28, 2022:
It means acoustic bombardment, which has somewhat negative connotations - are they implying that it's bad for marine life?

acoustic bombardment

Thanks to Althea for discovering that this document is part of a lawsuit by Greenpeace, and they don't like this form of exploration because the noise is bad for marine life.

Thanks :-)
agree neilmac : Greenpeace are running a campaign to stop them doing it to whales....

an intensively loud noise

I imagine a severe storm.
'Clearly the hydro-meteorological conditions improve for sailing or navigation, with a level of surf on the waves and bursts of wind with less strength and intensity, to generate greater efficiency in the audible reception of sounding echos on the rebound from the seabed (or the depths of the ocean) with an intensively loud noise.'

disagree ormiston : Intensively does not work here. Why do you ten translate back into Spanish ?

neutral Andrew Bramhall : She meant " intensely"

neutral AllegroTrans : Eve if "loud noise" is correct, "intensively" is quite wrong, the word is "intensely"

(general) cacophony; cacophonous sounds

Clearly, more favourable hydro-meteorological navigation conditions with lower wave and wind levels generate higher efficiency in the reception of the sound echoes returned by the seabed to the (general) cacophony.
