I believe that when the screw has to be starved, it means that it has to be tightened more, to increase the compaction. På norsk vil man vel da si at skruen må skrues tettere for å øke kompresjonen/presset. Hva som er det eksakt rette ordet i denne oversettelsen kan jeg ikke svare på her og nå.

I want to add something... if the raw materials have some funny shapes (like waste furniture) then starving the screw can solve the feeding issue to the compactor. If you are not familiar with these machines, this short video would help....

You will see some moments that starving the feed would actually help compaction, and some other moments where it is counterproductive. Depending on the context maybe the source sentence is actually correct...

That pressure and heat make the raw materials get dried, compacted and bonded to each other. So when the product looks less compacted, operators say that "the feed is starved" and put more materials. To ensure good quality compaction, they often emphasize the phrase "don't let the feed starve."

Theoretically some materials may gain good compaction from starved feed, especially when the little amount leads to faster heating and higher temperature. But in 99% of the cases where these machines are used, bad compaction means you let the feed starve. So I would like to recommend you to check the source and review the material in question.
