If role playing the applicant, participants should not go too deep into upsetting memories and if there is a part they would prefer not to play, they may need to tell the trainer.
Acting can bring up long-forgotten memories from the past and some scenarios may be similar to past experiences they may have had.
Discuss in a general way with the group how to manage this without someone having to announce why they do not wish to play a particular role.
After each role play, ask the participants, in their small group, to spend a short time de-briefing so that the actors come back into their present selves and can discuss if they felt affected during the role plays.
Remind the participants of the role play procedure and safety netting before each role play.
