potager/kitchen garden

For a more decorative type of fruit and vegatable garden, consider potager garden.

A potager garden, also known as a “kitchen garden,” is historically a French style of gardening that incorporates herbs, fruits, and vegetables with flowers and ornamentals to create a functional, aesthetically pleasing space. Traditionally, these gardens are located right outside the home and intended to be enjoyed on a daily basis. Walk-throughs allow you to enjoy the garden’s beauty, while also providing quick and easy access to its bounty of food. You can step outside your door and pick fresh vegetables for the evening meal, as well as cut a bouquet of flowers for the table. Because there are no set rules for this type of garden, potagers come in all shapes and sizes, and vary drastically from the freestyle flow of a cottage garden, to the geometric rigidity of a knot garden, and everything in between.

The traditional kitchen garden, also known as a potager (from the French jardin potager) or in Scotland a kailyaird,[1] is a space separate from the rest of the residential garden – the ornamental plants and lawn areas. Most vegetable gardens are miniature versions of old family farm plots, but the kitchen garden is different not only in its history, but also its design. It differs from an allotment in that a kitchen garden is on private land attached to the dwelling.

The kitchen garden may serve as the central feature of an ornamental, all-season landscape, or it may be little more than a humble vegetable plot. It is a source of herbs, vegetables and fruits, but it is often also a structured garden space with a design based on repetitive geometric patterns. It has year-round visual appeal and can incorporate permanent perennials or woody shrub plantings around (or among) the annuals.

kitchen garden

Ogród użytkowy, to krótko mówiąc taki, na którym uprawiamy owoce, warzywa, zioła i inne rośliny, z których potem zbieramy plony

-----

Gardens were funcional and included kitchen gardens, infirmary gardens, cemetery orchards, cloister garths and vineyards. Vegetable and herb gardens helped provide both alimentary and medicinal crops, which could be used to feed or treat the sick. Gardens were laid out in rectangular plots, with narrow paths between them to facilitate collection of yields. Often these beds were surrounded with wattle fencing to prevent animals from entry.

Monasteries might also have had a "green court," a plot of grass and trees where horses could graze, as well as a cellarer's garden or private gardens for obedientiaries, monks who held specific posts within the monastery.

In the kitchen gardens, fennel, cabbage, onion, garlic, leeks, radishes, and parnips might be grown, as well as peas, lentils and beans if space allowed for them.

Situated at the top of the hill, the kitchen garden is one of our standout features.

Everything we grow here is used by our chef. That's why our dishes are packed with deliciously fresh flavours.

a fruit and vegetable garden

Ogrody użytkowe powoli wychodzą z mody - coraz częściej wolimy sadzić wokół domu rośliny ozdobne a coraz mniej w nich warzyw, ziół, drzew i krzewów owocowych.
