Claus Schultz, Technical Manager, Denmark, was having conversations with an expert in training explosives detection dogs, Jacob Westh of Biodetect.
Jacob has trained dogs for civil and military bodies globally, for uses such as de-mining, detecting explosives and narcotics.
Jacob outlined a new and particularly interesting way of using dogs to detect scents that he thought might be very useful for detecting pests - called REST (Remote Explosive Scent Tracing) - it involves extracting a portion of air from a shipping container or box, passing the air across a filter to trap any volatile compounds, and then presenting that filter to a dog in a remote test location to screen that filter for anything suspect.
This is a certified EU method for screening for explosives in air cargo, but the two began to wonder if it could be used against a range of pests as well.
At this point, M&I was involved, through Andy Brigham (Head of Science), to work with them and refine the idea, and try to find a way to bring the idea to life.
