English term
lions in the field
English to German
Law/Patents
Law (general)
Zivilrecht / civil law
This is from a complaint and jury demand in a civil action for sexual harassment. One of the defendants - the founder and CEO of a non-profit - is described as appearing "to be well-regarded by lions in the field". I have never heard that expression but I'm assuming it means "renowned experts in the field" and thought of translating this as "schien unter den Koryphäen auf diesem Gebiet ein hohes Ansehen zu genießen". However, before going ahead with this translation, I thought I'd ask the "lions" here on ProZ whether my understanding is correct. Looking forward to your feedback! TIA

Note from asker:

'Predators' instead of 'lions', 'territory/habitat'?
Wouldn't this stand for the hierarchy in the world of self-invented or at least perceived (by others...) leadership?
An individual at least who is thought to be outstanding within the community of his/her peers out there in the corresponding 'field' of whatever...?

Ein interessanter Gedanke, aber ich glaube, dass ein deutschsprachiger Leser bei diesem Bild erstmal stutzen und den Zusammenhang nicht sofort verstehen würde. |

Note from asker:
Diese Lösung finde ich auch sehr gut, aber m.E. passt sie nicht so gut für eine Non-Profit-Organisation. |

Maybe this helps:
The Highlanders, while fighting the battles of their country, and billeted among the various peoples, at home and abroad, were designated, "lambs in the house and lions in the field." There is another word something like this one in appearance
—
"nàisinn," implying a delicate and almost morbid sense of
moral obligation—which is frequently heard still, and always applied
only when a man is commended. These two words are very character-
istically Highland, and are both extremely creditable to the moral feelings of the people among whom they took their origin and are in constant use.

I say, by remarking that the boys who are most loved in this world are those who are lambs, ALMOST muffs, in the drawing−room, but lions in the field.

Maybe just "fighters (in the field)" would do.

Note from asker:
Thank you for the additional explanation, explaining the metaphor of the "lions in the field" as people fighting for a cause. That fits very well here, I think! |
