Definition from Engineering Dictionary:
A widely used method of case hardening steel that eliminates scaling and the tendency to decarburisation and results in clean components. Sodium cyanide is the common media for this process, usually heated within the range of 900 930oC. It is advisable to pre heat the components in neutral salts to avoid a temperature drop resulting from immersing cold components into the cyanide. After carburising, either single quench hardening or refining and hardening and tempering is carried out.

الكربنة هي عملية إضافة الكربون إلى الفولاذ المنخفض الكربون، أي تشكيل طبقة سطحية غنية بالكربون. وتستعمل الكربنة السائلة عادة لكربنة الأجزاء الصغيرة وبسماكات صغيرة وتجري في حمامات ملحية تحتوي كربونات الصوديوم وكلوريد الصوديوم والسليكون، مع التسخين حتى درجة 850-820 والإبقاء عند هذه الدرجة لمدة تصل إلى ساعة حيث يتشكل أول أكسيد الكربون، والكربون الحر، ويقومان بإشباع سطح هذه الأجزاء بالكربون، و بعد إجراء الكربنة تتم التقسية بإخراج الأجزاء مباشرة من الحمام إلى الماء أو الزيت حسب نوع الفولاذ.

Liquid carburizing is a process that is usually used for small and medium-sized parts. In the salt bath the carbon to be diffused in the workpiece comes from a molten salt that is a mixture of sodium cyanide (NaCN) and barium chloride (BaCl2).
