Discussion

Milena Atanasova Feb 28, 2021:
food for thought I agree, Saeed. Personally, I'd always use 'underachiever' with a student, 'underperformer' with an employee/worker. Even the presence of يشجع and بوعي واحترام make me think it's an educational context - because a boss wouldn't bother with any of these :). I've been trying to find some statistical proof online, like the number of results that contain both underachiev* and student* and the other way round. It's time consuming, because the students can be also "schoolchildren", "pupils" and what not. The same goes for underperform* and worker*, employee*, etc. And yes, it's a slight difference, but it's there.

@Milena
Thanks for your input. I'd like to add that the context, particularly "بوعي و احترام" suggests giving them feedback "withoit blaming them". This is what makes me believe that it is more about not putting in the expected effort than being unable to perform well.

Thank you. "encourage the underachieving students (students who are underachieving)" is much better.

underperformers

As nouns the difference between underachiever and underperformer. is that underachiever is one who underachieves by performing less well than expected while underperformer is one who or that which underperforms, having performance that is below average or below expectations

There is a subtle but extraordinarily important difference between the two.

If you’re underperforming that’s on you.

If you’re underachieving you might just have set your targets out of sight for the circumstances that you find yourself in.

Peer comment(s):

agree Milena Atanasova : In my opinion, students'performance is assessed by means of whether they pass exams, which are landmark achievements. By contrast, workers don't score landmark achievements and are instead assessed through how well "perform" day-to-day.

Thanks Milena. The border between your answer and mine is really fuzzy, but the nuance is there.
