German term

Kommunikanten

German to English Social Sciences Religion
A short history of an Evangelical Lutheran parish in Nebraska, written in 1920, includes the following:

Parochialbericht vom Jahre 1919:
484 Seelen. 286 Kommunizierende. 78 Stimmberechtigte. 1 Schule. 1 Lehrer. 40 Schulkinder. 160 Schultage. 17 Getauft. 12 Konfirmiert. 500 Kommunikanten. 3 Paare getraut. 2 Begraben.

My question is: What is the difference between "Kommunizierende" and "Kommunikanten"? I understand "Kommunizierende" to be "communicants," i.e. those entitled to partake of Holy Communion. 286 of the 484 members of the parish are thus communicants. However, the list also includes "500 Kommunikanten" (more than the total number of parishioners!), so what/who could they be?

Administered 500 times in the year - possible Today, many Lutheran churches offer the Eucharist weekly, while others offer it less often. Weddings and funerals sometimes include the celebration of the Eucharist in Lutheran churches. At the ordinations of pastors/priests and the consecration of bishops, the Eucharist is always offered.

@Timoschka I think it must be something like that, as the number of Kommunikanten is higher that the total number of souls. I also find your arithmetic (roughly twice per communicant) persuasive, and supported by my understanding of the Lutheran church, that communion is taken/offered much less frequently than in the Roman Catholic church.

@ philgoddard I know. That's what makes this passage SO confusing. I'm wondering if "Kommunizierende" is used for the number of people receiving Holy Communion, and "Kommunikanten" is the actual number of times Holy Communion was administered that year (approximately twice a year for each communicant)????? Notice that "Kommunikanten" appears in the list of baptisms, confirmations, marriages and deaths. Thus, it seems like it's more of a "sacrament" than a person. Maybe I'm just grasping at straws here...

Addendum I found another reference online, which differentiates between "Kommunizierende" and "Kommunikanten": “Die Mission zählt 1908 getaufte Seelen, 845 Kommunizierende und 228 Stimmberechtigte. Die Wochenschulen wurden von 1386 Kindern besucht. Die Zahl der Kommunikanten betrug 1751…”

The round figure of 500 looks like an estimate based on a stock take of wafers.

Within the wider Presbyterian Church structure, there are two types of membership that exist within a local church:

· An “adherent member” is someone who calls Grafton Presbyterian their church and meets regularly with us without taking formal membership.
· A “communicant member” is someone who has taken formal membership, calls Grafton Presbyterian their church and meets regularly with us.

There are two important differences between adherents and communicants, is that:
· Only a Christian can become a communicant.
· Only communicants can have a role in determining who the minister and elders are.

communion takers

I agree with Phil. The second part of the list appears to refer to events like marriages and baptisms and the first part to types of people or other nouns like schools. So I would agree that kommunizierende may mean people who actually took communion or who are eligible to partake of it.
Kommunikanten will then be the number of times that communion was administered. The question may come up, more than once per day? No, the number of times that communion was administered to someone. So 500 times, someone took communion. It may even be that it was rounded off because they don't have a precise record of who took it more than once. Also maybe there were some people from out of town who were just there when it was served.
