German term

abweichender Prüfungsort

German to English Other Education / Pedagogy examination regulations

alternative test centre

rather than ‘alternate’ I think
Note from asker:
Thank you! Will I be persuaded that it has to be this, after all?
Peer comment(s):

agree Michele Fauble : alternative testing location

agree Klaus Beyer

neutral Lancashireman : It's a makeshift solution, not an approved 'centre', and they are doing exams, not tests (Covid, MOT etc), but apart from that, 'alternative' could work, especially with the weight of public opinion behind it.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "This was the most helpful answer because kwatkins and her supporters taught me that "alternative" can be used more widely than I originally thought. But it's better to say "location" as it is only a temporary venue- now that's another possibility.... "

emergency/contingent/ersatz location

None of which sounds particularly inviting
Note from asker:
Thank you! Perhaps not "ersatz" as this is known to be a German word!
Peer comment(s):

agree Lancashireman : contingency (with a -cy) https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/continge... // Then I guess the EN-US adjective form of emergency is 'emergent'. Stay safe and get vaccinated pronto.

I had it, changed it, had it, changed it. Contingency is not an adjective in AE. But it works, too. Be well, my friend.

alternate testing location(s)

Gets a lot of use on this side of the Atlantic.
Note from asker:
Thank you! Would it be O.K. in a Britisch (European) context, too?

non-registered [exam] venue

Should external circumstances dictate a change of venue, this must be within a 20km radius of the registered centre, and the examinations board must be informed.

regulärer Ort = registered venue/centre
abweichender Ort = non-registered venue

If it is 'abweichend' and up to 20km away, it can no longer be described as a 'centre'.

OR substitute venue
Note from asker:
Thank you, Lancashireman I was tempted by this paricularly because you were thinking outside the box. But I have a little niggling doubt because this "other" location has to be indirectly registered, too. Telling the examination board about it in advance is tantamount to registration isn't it?
