vignes sont déchaussées

My attempt:

The dreaded month of April is known as known as the time of “ice saints”, where vines can freeze. In May, the base of the vines are cleared/unearthed/(surely not removed/loosened?) with a tractor and the stumps are cleaned.

But not feeling great about it.

The late (and much missed) Giles Watson has 'scalzatura', the Italian term for déchaussage, translated as 'unearthing: removing soil from vine stem base after winter' in his wine glossary. HTH

To Asker You may already have seen this multilingual site: https://www.bordeaux.com/us/Our-know-how/A-year-in-the-life-...
If you look in April, under "tire-cavillon", you will see that they translate "Après avoir déchaussé la vigne..." as "After removing the piled earth from around the vines...". They get around it with a circumlocution and I am not sure that is the best way to deal with it. However, they do explain what is actually being done.

@ Asker By the way, I think your 'dreaded' is a bit OTT; and the way it is used 'est redouté' suggest rather that they are wary of it, for example...
Tony M Sep 27, 2020:
@ Asker Interestingly, the writer seems to have got a bit muddled up: the 'Saints de Glace' are actually in mid-May!!! Hence why the possibility of late frosts is to be feared.

tion.
