Catalan term

morter de presentació

Catalan to English Art/Literary Architecture
Hi, hoping someone can help me with this.

I can't track down an English term for this -'presentation morter' doesn't look like an option. I've included two examples of use below:

Thanks for your help! Hi Helen/Anthony,

Sorry for coming back so late on this one. I never received a reply as to what translation was eventually used for this term although I asked on two occasions.

Thank you both for your time and help :-)

hydraulic lime

I've spent a long time on this question but I haven't been able to find a translation. The mortar is used around the edge of the mural but I can't find anything for hydrauic lime frame/edges.

Morter de presentació: 1 vol de calç hidràulica Saint-Astier NHL 3,5
2 vols sorra fina
1 vol pumicita
4/5 vols coccio pesto (fang cuit triturat)
1/5 vols ocre

Hydraulic lime
Main article: Hydraulic lime
Hydraulic lime sets by reaction with water called hydration.

When a stronger lime mortar is required, such as for external or structural purposes, a pozzolan can be added, which improves its compressive strength and helps to protect it from weathering damage. Pozzolans include powdered brick, heat treated clay, silica fume, fly ash, and volcanic materials. The chemical set imparted ranges from very weak to almost as strong as Portland cement.

This can also assist in creating more regulated setting times of the mortar as the pozzolan will create a hydraulic set, which can be of benefit in restoration projects when time scales and ultimately costs need to be monitored and maintained.

Sorry, I meant to write 'lime mortar", NOT 'hydraulic lime'.

surface mortar/restoration mortar

There are not enough hits for this on Google to suggest "morter de presentació" is an established term. The usage seems to be just a way of telling us the function of the material.

In the few Google hits (basically from three sources)"presentació" has to do with the display of restored elements - either in terms of a border or background. (In the raco.cat hits, the physical appearance of the mortar is aesthetically important for showing off the restored image/artefact.)

So we're looking at a display material to be used to fill gaps in the surfaces of frescoes or mosaics, to frame or offset artefacts, or to bridge gaps in fragmented architectural elements.

This means you can be quite free in your choice because you're not really dealing with an existing term.

In the first case you cite, I'd go with "surface mortar" (widely used in restoration). In the second I'd go with "framing mortar/mortar used for edging", since the exact function is specified ("morter de presentació perimètric").

I don't think the "hydraulic" question is really important because we're dealing with the mortar's function rather than its composition. In terms of what the material would be called, regardless of its use, I'd go for "restoration mortar".
