French term

trame balais

French to English Tech/Engineering Engineering (general) Water meter specs
This is for water meter specs. It refers to different kinds of frames, then refers to a 'trame balais' as one of the types of frames.

Searching smart water meters, I find numerous functions, e.g. for alarm detection: leakage of various degrees of catastrophe, drip alert, leak alarm, burst pipe alarm, dampness in cellar alarm plus leaks in individual locations such as kitchen, bathroom, aquarium etc.plus temperature, consumption etc. I wonder if the trame balais is a touch screen for switching between these functions. Or displaying status on a rolling basis. I may be up the creek but if anybody agrees, maybe you could suggest something on this basis.
Carla Selyer (asker) Jul 28, 2020:
I was thinking something like a 'sweep frame', since there is such a thing as a 'ping sweep'.
Tony M Jul 28, 2020:
@ Asker Ah well, that makes a HUGE difference! Déjà, to know that it is to do with software!!
In that case, 'frames' could indeed make sense, as 'frames of data'.
I bet 'balais' in the case is something to do with 'scanning' (aka 'sweeping') — though exactly in what way I couldn't say...
Carla Selyer (asker) Jul 28, 2020:
Context of this question I agree, the question did not have adequate context, thank you for pointing that out. The context here is the software used for remote reading of the meters, not the physical meters themselves. It states: 'Il va exister plusieurs types de trames: trame balais, trame alarme...'. It does not describe the 'trame balais', but it is merely listed as one of the software features. Another example of the types listed is: 'émettent des signaux selon des trames de réveil, de synchronisation et de données'.
Tony M Jul 28, 2020:
@ Chris I suspect this refers to the actual metering technique used; though I even wondered if it might refer to the 'dial' types, where the pointer 'sweeps' the scale? (rather than the numeric counters)
chris collister Jul 28, 2020:
In the absence of context (I'm sounding like a cracked record...) the "trame" COULD be a grid, and the "balais" COULD be a coarse filter, i.e. something that sweeps debris, but who knows, frankly? Is there a diagram? A section heading? Are these meters mechanical or electronic?
B D Finch Jul 28, 2020:
@Asker Agree with Tony's comment. It's most unlikely, in my view, that this is a "frame".
Tony M Jul 28, 2020:
@ Asker Where are you geting 'frames' from? What is the term used in FR?
If we are to help you properly, I think you need to give us more concrete examples from the source language.
