In my first Olympics, I came a sliver shy of winning a medal in doubles after reaching quarter finals.

He is obviously wants to say that he was on the brink of winning a medal. Is there any misspelling here?

Thanks in advance,

A sliver is a very thin slice, as in cake, for example. And shy means a short distance from. So he or she almost won a medal.
