You are right; invest just as much effort in answering as the asker has.
And yet, my own answer "beggars belief", as you say, and you are probably right -even though all this is pretty much straightforward from a clinical point of view. And so the explanation, which was not given before in spite of previous comments, is intended to address both your comments and the implicit original question; is a literal rendering appropriate in this case? And my answer is you could use a literal rendering but a non literal one would be more appropriate in this case -as originally stated and finally explained.
I think it is interesting though (sometimes) to go a little deeper in a translation. And this is one of those cases where the literal translation is just so common that makes one feel it must be the right one -while it actually is "a bit wrong".
No matter what, you are fully right that askers should invest at least a little effort explaining the whats and the whys of their doubts.

You shouldn't need to explain all this - this is what Giovanni should explain in his question, when he shows his attempts to resolve the problem (do his own work) rather than just mindlessly turning to Kudoz.

This is the reason why (gasometría) "arterial" or (gases) "arteriales" rather than (gases) "en sangre" is quite more appropriate in this particular case.
The only nuance here is that the original refers specifically to the oxygen measured in arterial blood. Clinically, you can get a venous or an arterial blood gas test. In English, blood gas test is commonly used to refer to arterial blood gas test.
What is a blood gas test?
A blood gas test measures the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood. It may also be used to determine the pH of the blood, or how acidic it is. The test is commonly known as a blood gas analysis or arterial blood gas (ABG) test.

But it is not the same an arterial versus a venous blood gas test -and the pO2 levels are different in arterial versus venous blood. See here for instance:
