I have run into this term a fair amount in art history texts. It seems to describe non-academic study of art from the mid-19th to mid-20th century. Is there a term like this in ENglish. The specific context is the brief bio of an Argentine artist:

This refers to art schools where anyone can sign up for classes. They're the equivalent of the Art Students League of New York. (I know this because aside from being a translator, I'm an artist. And because I lived in NYC and Mexico for a long time.) Cheers!

The artist herself is not 'something that had been formed'. Perhaps a group of artists was formed in Paris around that time, if not before or after. The group could have later progressed to make a magazine for publication.

: I doubt very much whether Ludmila Feodorovna, the artist in question, would take very kindly to being referred to as "something" that "had been formed"!//just shows that word-for-word translations simply don't work, especially at PRO level :((
