sacar la baraja

I'm wondering if there is a term for this phrase other than "to take out the pack" (of cigarettes or cards). Here is an excerpt of the conversation that "sacar la baraja" appears in. The scene is on a train in Mexico in the 1940s or 50s, and a group of teenagers are talking to each other:

—Ya es tiempo de sacar la baraja.
—¡Flaco! Pásame los cigarros; vamos a echar humo.

I've decided to go with "get the cards out" because it fits the tone of speech from the scene. Also, seeing as this is 40s/50s Mexico, you could smoke any time, so there would be no waiting to take out a cigarette. So, I think they are taking out the cards. Thank you, everyone. Looks like I didn't miss some hidden idiom that I wasn't aware of.

Yeah, I don't think it's meaning to say "put the cards on the table" but instead is either referring to a pack of cards or cigarettes. There's nothing else in the context to hint at what type of pack it is - so they could either be about to play cards and smoke....or just smoke.

The obvious question... You say it can refer to a pack of cards. Do they go on to play cards? If not, then it presumably refers to cigarettes.

Get the cards out

As Marouchka says, they're going to play cards - or so it seems, without more context it's a little difficult. I think it's a case of "get the cards out and let's smoke". Hope this helps. Don't think it's put the cards on the table, although viable, but without more context it's tricky to say.

Couldn`t it simply be that they are going to play cards and have a cigarette at the same time?
Example sentence:

It's time to get out the pack of cards
