Lydia De Jorge Mar 1, 2020:
@Robert También dice:Aseñorado/da: adj. Dicho de una persona ordinaria: Que imita los modales del señor.
Robert Carter Mar 1, 2020:
@Lydia "Aseñorado" also means "Parecido a lo que es propio de señor" (DRAE, https://dle.rae.es/aseñorado?m=form), and consequently it's often meant in a derogatory way to mean stuffy, dated, boring, old-fashioned, conservative, etc. I think the idea here is a truck design that doesn't take any risks, that sticks to a tried-and-trusted formula, so although it's refined it's also kind of dull, like Buicks and Cadillacs used to be (they seem to have changed their design philosophy in recent years).
I, for one, have never heard it used in the sense you've described (pretentious) here in Mexico.
Lydia De Jorge Mar 1, 2020:
Se refiere a un diseño pretencioso que quiere parecer lo que no es. Creo que 'pretentious design' puede servir.

would-be classic designs

Adapted from Lydia's suggestion, but slightly less informal. This could be an option... or maybe "faux classic designs"...
Example sentence:

So why, they ask, does today's state-of-the-art engineering need to be wrapped in a faux-classic design,

America's automakers adopted so many unnecessary faux-classic design touches...

Peer comment(s):

agree patinba : "innovative vs classic" without the "would-be" conveys the idea well I think.

No sé. Me parece que hay que dejar un matiz de "quiere pero no puede" (aseñorado vs señorial)...
agree Marian Vieyra : Would-be classics, without designs.

Staid designs

The idea of "aseñorado" is that they're classic but kind of dull and old-fashioned.

Also, pretentious design.
Peer comment(s):

agree neilmac : "Wannabe" is very informal (but could work), but I find 'pretentious' rather judgemental.

snobbish/with seniority designes

My dictionary registers: Aseñorado/a. lordly, pompous, snobbish, affecting superiority.

So for a car I would suggest:
