Damals fragte uns Angestellte niemand, was wir seien. Wir waren einfach da: Waschen, Flicken am Morgen. Servieren am Mittag. Und Heuen am steilen Melchaabord am Nachmittag

may not be a river, but perhaps a hill or chain of hills?

haying on the steep hills of the Melchaabord/Melch Lake

The Melch-Aa is a lake, not a river (the Melk is in Austria)in Swityerland. The Bord can have sevveral meanings, my first guess would be "Wand."
