Also, I\'m not sure how to get the difference between dirección and gestión across... any ideas?" to "I\'m not sure how to get the difference between dirección and gestión across... any ideas?"

Proposed translations
normal running and effective management
For "dirección" you could also use "governance" or even "direction" (i.e., what "directors" do).
"Efectiva" is even more ambiguous, IMO; it could mean "effective" (successful) or "actual" (hands-on), or even "permanent" (as opposed to "temporary"). Take your pick, I suppose.
efectivo, va
1. adj. Real y verdadero, en oposición a quimérico, dudoso o nominal.
2. adj. eficaz.
3. adj. Dicho de un empleo o de un cargo: Que está en plantilla, en contraposición al interino o supernumerario o al honorífico.

common operation and true managerial term
everyday operations and the effective management
You may or may not want to include "the", depending on how you handle the rest of the sentence.
