@Claude-Andrew It seems to be a similar situation of preparing a carefully formed bed to receive a rigid component that has to be evenly supported to prevent cracking.

@BD Thanks for the refs - yes, I agree it nearly always applies to shower trays. Here, the context of concrete thresholds is not dissimilar, at least as far as scale goes.
BTW, I'd like to have said "pants" to this project! But it's for a client who's given me a very large amount of work over the past ten years. Can't say no.
