Yo diría que el uso de 'over-the-counter' es una licencia: mi interpretación es que son exámenes que, por su especificidad, pueda hacer cualquier laboratorio. De allí a que mi sugerencia no sea una traducción literal (y esté aparentemente alejada del texto original).
