"Had his jersey retired" is what comes to this American's mind, but I'm unsure whether that's appropriate for your context. Is this someone who actually wears (or wore) what we Americans would call an "athletic jersey" in competitions? There is a tradition here in the U.S. of retiring the numbered jersey worn by a particularly successful or productive athlete, usually upon his or her retirement.

I've found the linked news article which confirms my inclination, at least in US English. I have no idea what the British equivalent might be.

disagree SafeTex : Whatever the reaons (and I've read them) for arriving at this translation, I would ask the simple question "how many readers are likely to understand it?" Charles had some reservation in the discussion about this. No number of the jersey for instance.
